Autonomous vehicle trial continues to fuel South Australia drive for Intelligent Transport Systems.

Integrating Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) into South Australia was the focus of a recent ITS Australia showcase event, on Tuesday 27 April, 2016, at the Royal Automobile Association of South Australia.
A full house heard presentations from Minister Stephen Mullighan, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, and ITS leaders at the latest state-based Business Networking event, hosted by ITS Australia.
South Australia is at the forefront of supporting technological innovations to create safer and more efficient transport systems by adopting connected vehicles and infrastructure.
“When some people think of intelligent transport systems, they just think of driverless cars, but there’s so much more happening in this space,” Minister Mullighan said.
“We are proud to be the first Australian state to test automated vehicles on its roads and now we are pushing forward with a number of initiatives to connect these vehicles with infrastructure, other transport modes and technologies, while collecting and analysing data.
“Exploring and developing this information will enable us to paint a better picture of what our cities and communities will look like in the future. This will bring benefits for families, commuters, local business and industry,” Minister Mullighan said.
Adelaide motorists already have the opportunity to use a number of innovations to enhance their journeys. The creation of a world-first app to advise road users of delays on the road was recently launched by Minister Mullighan. The hands-free system was developed in-house by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI), utilising Bluetooth receivers which monitor Adelaide’s road network.
Other speakers at the ITS Australia 2016 Business Networking event included Mark Borlace, Senior Manager, Mobility and Automotive Policy, RAA; Mark Shotton, Unit Traffic Management, Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure; Justin Passaportis, General Manager, Victoria and South Australia, GoGet CarShare and partner in the Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative (ADVI); and Paul Gray, Chief Executive, Cohda Wireless.
Susan Harris, CEO ITS Australia, informed the audience that last year’s autonomous vehicle trial in South Australia created global interest in Australia’s Intelligent Transport Systems capability.
“Registrations are open for this year’s 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems in Melbourne and many delegates have told us that the Adelaide trial put Australia on the map as a centre for autonomous and connected technology.
“Having driverless cars on the Southern Expressway in November 2015 raised awareness of Australia’s investment in mobility, transportation and infrastructure technologies and its collaborations with governments, business and industry on a number of projects.
“We expect more than 7,000 national and international delegates to attend the World Congress in Melbourne, 10-14 October to experience live demonstrations, technical tours, plenary, executive and special interest sessions. We look forward to welcoming delegates from South Australia,” Ms Harris said.
